Michael O’Hara is one of the talented fractional CMOs within our global team, based in the USA, and following his own experience with cancer, and it’s successful treatment, each year he sports an impressive moustache for Movember, and he’s doing it again this year.
The facts behind the facial hair
Movember was born of a need to address a crisis in men‘s health. Men are dying on average six years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons. Unchecked, prostate cancer rates will double over the next 15 years. Testicular cancer rates have already doubled in the last 50, and across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with males accounting for 75% of all suicides.
The initiative is uniquely placed to address that crisis on a global scale. The initiative funds groundbreaking projects all over the world, engaging men where they are to understand what works best and accelerate change.
As a result, the simple but visible, movement to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention, has grown over the past 12 years and raised more than £57.6 Million globally in 2018, spanning 20 countries and with 321,975 people taking part.
A potent combination of simple but visible symbolism, emotional stories, empathetic messaging but just enough good humour as well, the success of the Movember initiative is wonderful to see, and long may it continue. At the heart of its success is the way in which it’s stories and messaging resonates with real people, including Michael.
“I have personally been participating in the Movember movement for nine years now. It’s a worldwide charity that originally came about to shed light on prostate and testicular cancers in men because men didn’t get tested and too many died from the disease. It’s not just an old man’s disease. In fact, I’m a survivor (and cancer free for seven years) and if it hadn’t been for early detection, I would have been in big trouble. Also, over the last few years, Movember has focused on suicide amongst men. It’s a wildly popular global cause where we, the men that participate, grow moustaches during the month of Movember to create a dialog with folks to understand the impact on society and to raise money for research and awareness, I hope you will join me in that dialogue this year.”
